9/10/24 SF Giants injury notes: Tom Murphy reflects on 'tough' year, updates on Birdsong, Hicks, Ray. Since spraining a ligament in his left knee five weeks into the season, Tom Murphy has mostly been a ghost. Giving chase to a pitch in the dirt on a soggy May day in Philadelphia, Murphy felt a pop in his left knee and was given an initial diagnosis of a sprained MCL. More than four months later, Murphy has still not resumed catching and isn't expected back before the end of the season. The one time Murphy accompanied the team on the road since the injury was in Los Angeles after the All-Star break, making a brief cameo in the visitors' clubhouse at Dodger Stadium.

5/04/24 Giants' Murphy angrily slams gear after sustaining injury in downpour. Tom Murphy suffered an apparent injury while playing on a waterlogged Citizens Bank Park following a 70-minute rain delay, and he wasn't happy about it.

3/10/24 SF Giants split-squads: Lee records another hit in loss to Mariners, Murphy walks off White Sox. Catcher Tom Murphy ripped a two-out double to left field that scored Wade Meckler from second base, and the Giants walked off the White Sox, 5-4, in the home half of their spring split-squad games Sunday afternoon. “Coming through, hitting the ball hard, it's a win,” said bench coach Ryan Christenson, who served as manager with Bob Melvin on the road in Peoria. Michael Conforto also recorded hits in all three of his at-bats, raising his spring batting average to .400, and Joey Bart contributed a pair of base knocks and a sacrifice fly that scored the Giants' first run of the game.

1/08/24 I've seen the secret blueprints for middle infield, and they're not good. It's been 99 days since the San Francisco Giants last took the field, saw the Los Angeles Dodgers standing opposite them, made the type of stank face usually reserved for wearing at late night Bay Area establishments when Mac Dre comes on, and quietly walked out the door to hibernate for the winter. The Giants have made two notable additions for Opening Day, adding everyday center fielder Jung Hoo Lee and high-quality backup catcher Tom Murphy. President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi has been honest since day one that the bulk of those needs come up the middle.

1/05/24 Shota Imanaga's clock is ticking. It has been a very quiet few weeks for the Giants. The only thing of note that they've done since making a splash with Jung Hoo Lee is sign backup catcher Tom Murphy. A quick glance at their transactions page shows that their last official move was all the way back on December 26, when they re-signed Yoshi Tsutsugo to a Minor League deal ... a contract that was reported months ago. All of baseball has been quiet since Yoshinobu Yamamoto signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers four days before Christmas.

1/04/24 What's next for SF Giants in abnormally quiet offseason?. With six weeks until pitchers and catchers report, more than half of MLB Trade Rumors' Top 50 free agents are still available. Only six teams have spent $100 million or more so far this winter, the Giants among them, allocating $121.25 million to Jung Hoo Lee and Tom Murphy. Although the front office struck out on its two top targets in the worst possible way — with Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto teaming up on the archrival Dodgers — the offseason hasn't been a total dud for Farhan Zaidi and his crew.

12/23/23 Catcher Tom Murphy and the San Francisco Giants finalize $8.25 million, 2-year contract. Catcher Tom Murphy and the San Francisco Giants finalized an $8.25 million, two-year contract on Saturday, a deal with a 2026 team option that could make the agreement worth $12 million over three seasons. Murphy gets $4 million in each of the next two seasons, and the Giants have a $4 million option for 2026 with a $250,000 buyout. After adding South Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee with a $113 million, six-year contract, the Giants brought in a veteran behind the plate who could share time with Patrick Bailey following his stellar rookie season on defense.

8/03/23 Sho-Down: Mariners at Angels Series Preview. After winning their one-series homestand, the Mariners depart on a one-series road trip. These four games against the Angels feel momentous (as so many series against the Angels seem to): a referendum on each team's deadline approach, an opportunity for one to knock the other down a full tier in the Wild Card race, a prelude to a push for Ohtani come winter. The Mariners have won four series in a row and bats up and down the lineup have come alive since mid-July. With Tom Murphy particularly ablaze and talk of an extension in the works , I'll be paying attention to Murph this round. Who will you be focused on this weekend?
