7/4/24 6:08 AM - Brayan Bello's suggestion that helped spark rebound in Red Sox win vs. Marlins. Brayan Bello is in the midst of his least productive season with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox defeated the Miami Marlins 7-2 as Bello pitched a season-high 6.2 innings and allowed seven hits, one walk and one (earned) run while striking out seven batters. The Marlins are as easy to beat as they come but Bello nonetheless did his job really well. Getting an easy opponent like that can serve as a springboard for Bello as he puts his bad games behind him.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder has posted an incredible turnaround from his 2023 stats, and he's beginning to get the league-wide recognition he deserves. Many reporters and fans believed Duran's 2023 offense was a fluke, and his defense didn't justify keeping him around if he reverted back to his previous plate production. The Red Sox fielded calls for the outfielder over the winter and it seemed he was destined to be traded. Now, Duran has raced his way into a likely All-Star spot and potential American League MVP candidacy.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Steven Kwan had a big day Wednesday despite Cleveland's 8-2 loss to Chicago . Sure, he posted a leadoff single in the first inning, but that's rather pedestrian by his own standards. We're used to seeing Kwan regularly drop three-hit games without breaking much of a sweat. And yes, he was announced as a starter in the All-Star Game after edging Baltimore's Anthony Santander for the final outfield spot in the American League by a vote of baseball fans worldwide. He will be the first Cleveland outfielder elected to start in the game since Juan Gonzalez in 2001. Baltimore won for the sixth time in seven games and continued Seattle's recent side that has seen a 10-game lead in the AL West dwindle down to two. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 21st save for Baltimore and 438th of his career moving him into fourth-place alone on the all-time saves list.

Zach Neto (SS - LAA)
7/3/24 9:04 PM - Angels done in by sloppy defense and anemic hitting in loss to A's. Zach Neto slapped his hand into his glove and then put both hands over his head, with a look of exasperation. Another play that the Angels' shortstop expected to make had eluded him, as a run scored in the sixth inning. Neto's defense has been one of the shining spots for the Angels during this frustrating season, but it was a glaring issue in a 5-0 loss to the Oakland A's on Wednesday night. The Angels also had to take Luis Rengifo out of the game with an apparent hand injury after he fouled a ball off in the ninth inning.

Kyle Isbel (OF - KC)
7/3/24 8:32 PM - Royals' Kyle Isbel made an improbable leaping catch against the back wall in the 9th inning. Kansas City Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel made one of the best catches of the 2024 MLB season on Wednesday night. With his team up 4-2 on the Tampa Bay Rays, Isbel had to go to the back of the diamond to have a chance on a deep Taylor Walls hit with a Tampa Bay runner on second base. Rather than give up the error, Isbel leaped into the air with his back to the wall and snagged the ball for the second out for the top of the ninth inning.

After Isaac Paredes' two-out solo homer, his 14th, put the Rays ahead in the first, Wacha permitted just one other hit while finishing six innings, walking three with eight strikeouts to earn his first win since May 20. It was the 43rd quality start by Kansas City pitchers, third-most in the majors.

Bullpen reinforcements are coming with the anticipated debut of Gregory Santos, whose rehab assignment started Tuesday night with Triple-A Tacoma, seemingly on the near horizon and Gabe Speier a bit further behind but progressing in his work from the mound. What we won't see is Double-A Arkansas starter Logan Evans become a part of the Seattle Mariners' bullpen. How much will Gregory Santos' arrival to bullpen help the Seattle Mariners? The attempt to convert Evans to reliever has come to an end with the Mariners making the decision to move him back into the Arkansas starting rotation.

Casas previously set various projected return dates for himself, including this week's series in Miami, but the progression has been a bit slower than he hoped when he hit the injured list on April 21.

Anthony Volpe (SS - NYY)
7/3/24 2:37 PM - Should Yankees move Anthony Volpe out of leadoff spot?. Anthony Volpe may be a long-term fixture at the top of the Yankees' lineup, but with the way he's produced of late — and really for the last few months — he could find himself back in the bottom of the order soon. “That's a fluid situation and something we're paying attention to,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Volpe's status in the leadoff spot on Wednesday afternoon. Volpe's batting average is down to .257 on the year after his 0-for-5 in Tuesday night's loss to the Reds. Then again, the shortstop's struggles at the plate extend all the way back to April.

The news that Tigers' starter and top trade chip Jack Flaherty needed a second injection to clear up the inflammation in his lower back is troubling on all levels. Tyler Anderson (P - LAA)
7/3/24 11:19 AM - Angels-Yankees trade deadline connection continues to heat up with latest chatter. It is the time of year when we start getting loads of mock trade proposals and suggestions from baseball writers across the league. For the Los Angeles Angels, that has meant having basically every player on their roster mentioned as a possible trade target for other teams, as they're one of the few teams already labeled surefire sellers at the deadline this year so far. Recently, the rumor mill has shifted a bit away from the guys that almost every contending team could use (Tyler Anderson and Taylor Ward) to more niche pieces of LA's roster. Luis Rengifo is getting a good bit of attention due to his ability to play multiple positions (though inefficiently) and his recent hot streak at the plate, while resurgent Angels closer Carlos Estevez has become a top target for teams looking for rental bullpen help after a recent adjustment brought him back to respectability.

Julio Rodriguez (OF - SEA)
7/3/24 7:28 AM - Mariners host Orioles, desperate for Julio Rodriguez to find his groove. The Seattle Mariners have tried just about everything other than sacrificing a chicken to Jobu -- a la Pedro Cerrano in 1989's "Major League" -- to help Julio Rodriguez out of the worst slump of his young career. Dropped to the No. 7 spot in the batting order, Rodriguez went 0-for-4 Tuesday -- striking out with two runners in scoring position to end the game -- in a 2-0 loss to the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Rodriguez, a Silver Slugger award winner in each of his first two seasons in the majors, is 2-for-33 over his past eight games to drop his batting average to .244 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs just past the midpoint of the season. About four hours before Tuesday's game, Rodriguez was in the batting cage being watched closely by Mariners hitting coach Jarret DeHart, Hall of Fame member Edgar Martinez and Osvaldo Diaz, Rodriguez's personal batting coach who flew in at the team's request last week from Tampa, Fla.

For the Los Angeles Angels, Anthony Rendon's constant uncertain status has been difficult to work around. While relying on Rendon to stay on the field is an objectively bad bet, the Angels are also kind of pot-committed to at least trying to get something out of him given how much they are paying him. As a result, the team has been forced to be patient as Rendon rehabs from his hamstring injury. The latest word is that not only is Rendon going to face live pitching soon, but the consensus seems to be that, against all odds, he could return before the All-Star break.
