When Garrett Whitlock was ruled out for the season after undergoing elbow surgery, it appeared right-hander Cooper Criswell would have the chance to establish himself in the Red Sox rotation for the rest of the season. With that in mind, it came as a surprise to see Criswell packing up his locker and departing Rogers Centre before Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. With setup man Chris Martin ready to be active after missing 14 games due to anxiety, the Red Sox made the somewhat surprising decision to option Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday afternoon. | 5/30/24 | Red Sox RHP undergoing season-ending surgery on Thursday. The Boston Red Sox have been dealing with injuries all season, and now a second starting pitcher is done for the year. According to MLB.com's Ian Browne, right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock is undergoing an internal bracing procedure today on his injured UCL. This is the same procedure that Lucas Giolito had after suffering a UCL injury before the season started, and while it will end Whitlock's season, it's a better timeline than having Tommy John surgery.
