Brayan Bello's suggestion that helped spark rebound in Red Sox win vs. Marlins. Brayan Bello is in the midst of his least productive season with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox defeated the Miami Marlins 7-2 as Bello pitched a season-high 6.2 innings and allowed seven hits, one walk and one (earned) run while striking out seven batters. The Marlins are as easy to beat as they come but Bello nonetheless did his job really well. Getting an easy opponent like that can serve as a springboard for Bello as he puts his bad games behind him.

Ryan O’Hearn had a key two-out, two-run double and later added a solo home run, Dean Kremer threw five shutout innings in his first start since late May, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1. Baltimore won for the sixth time in seven games and continued Seattle’s recent side that has seen a 10-game lead in the AL West dwindle down to two. The Mariners lost for the 10th time in 13 games. Joey Estes goes the distance and Athletics beat Angels 5-0. Joey Estes pitched Oakland’s first individual shutout in more than three years and the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0. Estes (3-3) threw 68 of his 92 pitches for strikes, limiting Los Angeles to five singles and a walk with four strikeouts in the first complete game of his career. The right-hander induced three double plays and struck out Taylor Ward swinging to end the game. It was the 16th complete game in the majors this season, 10 of them shutouts. The last Oakland pitcher to accomplish the feat was Sean Manaea, who blanked the Mariners on June 2, 2021. Brent Rooker and Max Schuemann homered for Oakland.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder has posted an incredible turnaround from his 2023 stats, and he's beginning to get the league-wide recognition he deserves. Many reporters and fans believed Duran's 2023 offense was a fluke, and his defense didn't justify keeping him around if he reverted back to his previous plate production. The Red Sox fielded calls for the outfielder over the winter and it seemed he was destined to be traded. The Boston Red Sox have performed so well over the last month that it seems like a foregone conclusion that they will end up buying at the trade deadline unless something crazy happens. Shohei Ohtani has become the first player elected to start at designated hitter in four straight All-Star Games. He'll be joined by Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge as the only holdovers from last year in the lineups for the July 16 game at Arlington, Texas. Philadelphia could have three of the four National League infielders after fans voted shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm to start alongside first baseman Bryce Harper, whose has a leg injury. In his first start since June 25, Bello (8-5) gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out seven. Red Sox center fielder Jarren Duran and left fielder Rob Refsnyder robbed Miami’s Josh Bell of extra base hits with standout defensive plays. Duran ran and tracked down Bell’s drive at the wall in the sixth, and Refsnyder dove to catch a line drive in the eighth.

The 427-foot drive into the Texas bullpen in right-center helped give the Padres their 10th win in 13 games. San Diego ended Texas' three-game home shutout streak on Manny Machado’s two-run shot in the third. Jurickson Profar had two hits on the night he was named an All-Star for the first time as an NL starter. Estes (3-3) threw 68 of his 92 pitches for strikes, limiting Los Angeles to five singles and a walk with four strikeouts in the first complete game of his career. The right-hander induced three double plays and struck out Taylor Ward swinging to end the game. It was the 16th complete game in the majors this season, 10 of them shutouts. Cincinnati Reds Savor The Rare Achievement Of Getting Aaron Judge On A Double Play. Starting with his first homer in his first at-bat against Matt Andriese, on Aug. 13, 2016, there are 220 pitchers so far to experience the frustration of becoming members of the “I gave up a home run to Aaron Judge” club. Conversely there are pitchers in another club, one that is more pleasing from the mound and it is “I got Aaron Judge to hit in a double play” club. In 921 regular-season games, Judge has hit into 92 double plays. Fernando Cruz became the latest, getting Judge to hit into a double play with two on in a one-run game in the seventh.

Angels done in by sloppy defense and anemic hitting in loss to A's. Zach Neto slapped his hand into his glove and then put both hands over his head, with a look of exasperation. Another play that the Angels' shortstop expected to make had eluded him, as a run scored in the sixth inning. Neto's defense has been one of the shining spots for the Angels during this frustrating season, but it was a glaring issue in a 5-0 loss to the Oakland A's on Wednesday night. The Angels also had to take Luis Rengifo out of the game with an apparent hand injury after he fouled a ball off in the ninth inning.

According to MLB.com transaction reports, Lamb has signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. 2 Dodgers stars snubbed from starting All-Star game. MLB announced the 2024 All-Star starters and there were two glaring omissions from the Dodgers. Neither Mookie Betts nor Teoscar Hernandez were included in the starting lineup for the NL in this year's All-Star game. Betts was beat out by Phillies shortstop Trea Turner, while Hernandez was passed over for Padres Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr., as well as Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Braves.

Alex Cora gives injury update on Triston Casas, three other injured Red Sox. South Florida native Triston Casas didn't make the trip back home with the Red Sox to Miami this week, but he's continuing to ramp up in advance of potentially rejoining the lineup at some point this month. Casas took approximately 20 dry swings (not making contact with anything) Tuesday at Fenway Park, manager Alex Cora said Wednesday. “He took like 20 swings yesterday, dry swings,” Cora said. Casas previously set various projected return dates for himself, including this week's series in Miami, but the progression has been a bit slower than he hoped when he hit the injured list on April 21.

Chris Devenski, who was releasedby the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, signed a major league deal with the Mariners on Tuesday. It would seem that the second half of the Chicago Cubs' 2024 season will be dedicated to a youth movement, with it looking likely with each passing day that the Cubs will be sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline. Recent rumors have suggested that Nico Hoerner may be among the players traded at the Trade Deadline at the end of the month, with the Seattle Mariners appearing to be a possibility. There is some logic to the idea of the Cubs trading Hoerner considering his contract expires after the 2025 season and the team has two ascending infield prospects in 2023 first-round pick Matt Shaw and James Triantos.

Angels-Yankees trade deadline connection continues to heat up with latest chatter. It is the time of year when we start getting loads of mock trade proposals and suggestions from baseball writers across the league. For the Los Angeles Angels, that has meant having basically every player on their roster mentioned as a possible trade target for other teams, as they're one of the few teams already labeled surefire sellers at the deadline this year so far. Recently, the rumor mill has shifted a bit away from the guys that almost every contending team could use (Tyler Anderson and Taylor Ward) to more niche pieces of LA's roster. While relying on Rendon to stay on the field is an objectively bad bet, the Angels are also kind of pot-committed to at least trying to get something out of him given how much they are paying him. As a result, the team has been forced to be patient as Rendon rehabs from his hamstring injury. The latest word is that not only is Rendon going to face live pitching soon, but the consensus seems to be that, against all odds, he could return before the All-Star break.
