9/28/24 How Ryan Helsley turned 'obligation' of classic closer role into Cardinals' record 49 saves. Ryan Helsley steered his truck toward the exit of the Cardinals' spring training parking lot last March when he paused to talk with a reporter, do some quick math, and describe just what was possible if he got a chance to add up a season, one ninth inning at a time. With a scoreless ninth inning against the San Francisco Giants to finish an 6-3 victory, Helsley collected his 49th save of the season.

9/26/24 Cardinals Flamethrower One Outing Away From Breaking Incredible Franchise Record. The St. Louis Cardinals have plenty to address this winter as the club looks to rebound from missing the playoffs for a second straight year but at least the bullpen should stay intact. In a season full of inconsistent performances from key players, the Cardinals' relief core remained a reliable constant for the club -- ranking No. 7 in the league with a 3.62 ERA. The bullpen's success this year couldn't have been possible without its leader, who has the chance to set a remarkable franchise record before the season ends. Cardinals right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley logged his No. 48 save of the season Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies in a 5-2 victory, tying the franchise record for most single-season saves since RHP Trevor Rosenthal's 2015 performance.

9/21/24 Ivan Herrera's home run proves critical as Cardinals hold on for a 6-5 win over the Guardians. At the start of the eighth inning, it certainly looked as if the Cardinals had a comfortable lead and that closer Ryan Helsley could safely expect a night off. By the time the top half of the eighth finished, there was little doubt Helsley would be called upon in the ninth. Helsley, the National League saves leader, retired the side in order in the ninth, on three strikeouts, and earned his 46th save of the season — 25 at Busch Stadium — and put the finishing touches on a 6-5 Cardinals win over the freshly-minted AL Central Division champion Cleveland Guardians (they clinched earlier in the night) in front of an announced crowd of 41,317 at Busch Stadium on Saturday night.

8/02/24 3-run rally in 9th earns Cubs victory over Cardinals, 5-4. The Cubs had the right batters they needed at the right time to stun Ryan Helsley and the Cardinals on Thursday night at Wrigley Field. Helsley inherited a 4-2 lead when he entered the game for the bottom of the ninth inning. It became a 4-3 game when Cody Bellinger homered and Helsley's trouble really began. Nico Hoerner singled with two outs, stole second and scored the tying run on a double by Dansby Swanson.

7/18/24 St. Louis Cardinals Closer Made Awesome Team History in First Half of Season. The St. Louis Cardinals open up the second half of the season on Friday night against the Atlanta Braves and they'll do so with a 50-46 record that has them in second place in the National League Central. As the Brewers slipped up before the break, St. Louis has moved to within 4.5 games of the division lead. One of the many reasons why the Cardinals have been able to right the ship in 2024 is the stellar play of closer Ryan Helsley. The flamethrower represented the Cardinals in the All-Star Game this past week and made some awesome team history in the first half of the season.

7/15/24 Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley elects not to pitch in All-Star Game, replaced on NL roster. The Cardinals' lone representative at this year's All-Star Game has elected to be a spectator and preserve his health and begin his readiness for the season's second half. After talking with Cardinals coaches, trainers, and the National League staff at the annual showcase of the game's best, closer Ryan Helsley has decided it's best for him and his second-half availability not to pitch in the game. "As active as I've been for me it's going to be trying to be healthy, take the four days," Helsley said.

7/07/24 Lone star: Cardinals record-setting closer Ryan Helsley invited to All-Star Game in Texas. From their new perch of a winning record, the Cardinals could look back Sunday and acknowledge they did not have the start to the season they wanted. Ryan Helsley, who has thrived in a mutually defined role and spun so many of the Cardinals' close games into wins, received his second career All-Star Game selection Sunday. Major League Baseball announced the final rosters for next week's All-Star Game, in Texas, and the Cardinals, after their 8-3 victory against the Nationals, applauded their Lonestar and how he was essential to making sure a slow start did not convulse into a lost season.

7/01/24 Cardinals confident they can finish what they start vs. Pirates. The St. Louis Cardinals like their chances when they are leading late in a close game. Heading into their series opener Tuesday on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates, closer Ryan Helsley has converted 30 consecutive saves, which ties Lee Smith for the most by a St. Louis reliever before the All-Star break. Helsley hasn't blown a save since his season debut on March 30 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he ended up getting the win after St. Louis pulled out a 6-5 victory in 10 innings.

5/25/24 Orioles Could Compete with Dodgers, Yankees for Top Closer at Trade Deadline. The Baltimore Orioles figure to be very active at this season's MLB trade deadline as they try to chase down the New York Yankees for a second-consecutive American League East title. The Orioles have one of the best lineups in baseball this year and their rotation has been very good. There are plenty of options out there when it comes to improving at the margins but perhaps the most significant move they could make would be for St. Louis closer Ryan Helsley. In 2024 alone, Helsley has 15 saves and an ERA of 1.23, a performance that is on pace for a career year.

5/13/24 MLB power rankings: Cardinals back in NL Central basement. MLB MLB power rankings: Cardinals back in NL Central basement - and on track for dubious mark Gabe Lacques USA TODAY St. Louis Cardinals fans encountered a rare, welcome sight on Sunday: Ryan Helsley, on the mound, closing a game. And closing a wound, they hope. Helsley had not pitched in eight days, because closers on bad teams aren't really necessary, and make no mistake: The Cardinals have been a bad team. They came into Sunday on a seven-game losing streak that included dropping the first three games of a key series at Milwaukee. And while the 4-3 win salvaged the finale, the Cardinals have to worry how much damage has been done. St. Louis is 16-24, already eight games behind the Brewers

2/23/24 Bullpen competition set to heat up as Cardinals open spring schedule with split-squad games. From his vantage point at the back end of the Cardinals' bullpen, Ryan Helsley is eager to watch how the competition for jobs among the team's relief candidates plays out this spring. The competition – which likely will decide the final three relievers on the roster when the regular season begins – gets underway in earnest on Saturday with the Cardinals set to play split-squad games against the Marlins in Jupiter and the Mets in Port St. Lucie. It should be the most watched aspect of the team's spring training schedule. With five spots basically locked up, barring injuries, there are three openings for relievers and more than twice that number of candidates.

2/21/24 Building unity in crowded Cardinals’ bullpen is key to nailing down wins in 2024. “I think it feels good to know your teammates trust in you and believe in you and your manager believes in you to be out there,” closer Ryan Helsley said. “You want to help shorten the game.”

2/19/24 Ryan Helsley eyes return to All-star form after strong finish in 2023: Cardinals Extra. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley treated the final month of the 2023 season as though it were an early start to 2024. Overall, Helsley's 2023 statistics don't sound an alarm. Opposing hitters barreled pitches from Helsley at a lower rate and with almost identical average exit velocity and hard-hit rates as during his 2022 All-Star campaign. Last season, opponents got to him for multiple runs four times before the end of May. Opposing hitters' on-base percentage climbed from .201 against Helsley in 2022 up to .274 last season.
