Matt Vierling and Riley Greene each drove in a run as the host Detroit Tigers clinched their first playoff berth in 10 seasons with a 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. The White Sox (39-121) set the modern-day record for most losses in a single season, surpassing the expansion 1962 New York Mets. The Tigers, who won their sixth straight game, secured an American League wild-card berth. Detroit opener Brenan Hanifee allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. Brant Hurter (6-1) gave up one run on two hits over the next four frames. Chicago starter Garrett Crochet tossed four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out six. Akil Baddoo’s pinch-hit double in the 10th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. The teams were playing for the fifth time in eight days. Detroit trailed 2-0 with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but Matt Vierling doubled off Yimi Garcia and Kerry Carpenter hit his third homer in two games to tie the score. Tyler Holton held Seattle scoreless in the top of the 10th and Collin Snider walked Justyn-Henry Malloy to start the bottom of the inning. Baddoo pinch hit a deep fly ball over the head of Victor Robles to win the game.

West-leading Dodgers 9-4. Matt Vierling ripped a two-run double off reliever Ricky Vanasco to make it 9-6. Carson Kelly, who produced 804 frustrating feet of fly balls to center field earlier in the game, dumped an RBI single to left — 9-7. Then with two outs, rookie Colt Keith, who a doubled in two runs in the second inning, ambushed a first-pitch cutter that was inside and off the plate, and drove it into the seats in right field.
