10/04/24 [The Comeback] - How Mason Miller, Brent Rooker exceeded expectations for A’s in 2024. As the season began, Athletics pitcher Mason Miller took on a new role coming out of the bullpen. One he took and ran with. The same could be said of designated hitter Brent Rooker. Miller found himself in Arlington, Tex. in July walking the red carpet amongst the best in the game as a 2024 The post appeared first on .

9/28/24 [SB Nation: Athletics Nation] - Miller blows comeback, Mariners walk it off. The A’s hit three clutch homers in a back-and-forth battle with the Seattle Mariners, but Mason Miller blew the save and Zack Gelof had an unforced lapse in judgment that allowed the Mariners to walk it off in extra innings.

9/21/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - A's closer Miller reflects on success of historic rookie season. OAKLAND — Mason Miller has dominated in his rookie Athletics campaign, and it took the right-handed closer until his team’s to reflect on it. Miller holds a 2.37 ERA through 60 2/3 innings pitched with eight A’s games remaining during the 2024 MLB season. The 26-year-old was named an AL All-Star this summer and earned the nicknames “Miller Time” and “The Reaper” for his ability to shut down games with 96 strikeouts and a fastball that reaches 104 mph. The A’s hold a 67-87 record after Friday’s extra-inning loss to the New York Yankees, but their future is bright — and Miller is a big reason why. “It’s great, man,” Miller told NBC Sports California on Friday about his true rookie season. “I mean, I just don’t get a lot of chances to kind of appreciate a year in full until it’s over. “Just having a moment [to] look back on the year, the success that’s come with it, just in terms of my own personal kind of goals and aspirations, but also just seeing how it stacks up against, you know, previous Athletics [pitchers] in history.” Miller had to grind to reach this point. He was a project of a pitcher at Division III Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania, where it wasn’t until Miller received that he had answers for an above-7.00 ERA, poor stamina and inability to put on, let alone hold, weight. Then, a medically informed and treated Miller performed better before transferring to D-I Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, where he continued to flourish, gaining big-league traction. Miller ultimately was selected No. 97 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft by the A’s and made his major-league debut on April 19, 2023, as a starter. However, a right UCL sprain put what was supposed to be Miller’s rookie season on pause after just 10 appearances, placing him in when he returned. Still, the righty kept working as usual, making the most of his time out of the bullpen. And it all paid off. Miller became Wednesday after earning his 27th of the year in a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The most saves by a rookie in Oakland history belongs to Mason Miller ?? — Oakland A's (@Athletics) Even after experiencing so much throughout his baseball career, Miller struggles to fathom how far he has come. “I don’t think there are words that I can say that really put that into perspective — even for myself — at this point,” Miller said. “I think that’s something that you look back on in two, three, five, 10 years and really appreciate kind of the opportunity that I’ve been given — and earned here, too. Just grateful for the group of guys, coaches, and everybody that has helped me get to this point.” Wednesday’s feat truly encapsulated Miller’s rookie season. It was a moment he’ll never forget in one of baseball’s most iconic venues. One other moment from the 2024 season, though, stands out above all for Miller. Spoiler alert: it occurred in one of the few stadiums that rivals Wrigley’s aura regarding location, history and atmosphere. “I don’t even know, man,” Miller prefaced about his favorite moment of the season. “I feel like for me, every time I pitch, it’s important. “Probably [pitching] in New York — Yankee Stadium — early in the year, getting two saves. [The] lights are a little brighter, you know? That moment sticks out a little bit more than some of the other ones. Each save like that has been important. It’s got us a win, got us in the clubhouse celebrating. So, yeah, it’s that’s one that kind of sticks with me a little more.” Miller shut down the Yankees in April and collected two saves in the four-game series split. He earned heavy national attention after punching out New York stars Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, who don’t look like amateurs too often. “It’s always cool to play a big-market team like that — guys that are on MLB Central all the time, to see their highlights,” Miller added. “[The] lights shine a little brighter for sure.” Volpe, Soto and Judge didn't stand a chance against Mason Miller ?? — A's on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) The lights sure do shine brightly. The A’s definitely found something in Miller, and general manager David Forst appears to be building around the closer after refusing to deal him at the 2024 MLB trade deadline. No part of Miller’s journey has been a walk in the park. And even when things go right, as they have for the entire season, Miller fails to look around to admire what he has built for himself. Fortunately, Miller took a moment Friday to acknowledge his place as Oakland’s last great rookie closer.

9/20/24 'It's been on our mind': A's begin final home stand at Oakland Coliseum. Beginning with a three-game set against New York on Friday, the A's have officially entered their final home stand in The Town, the final days of what has been a six-month-long wake. “It's been on our mind for a couple home stands now,” said All-Star closer Mason Miller. If history is any indicator, the A's fan base will not go quietly into the night. There were the puppets of A's owner John Fisher and president Dave Kaval.

9/09/24 Miller named A's, AL West Roberto Clemente Award nominee . Mason Miller's impact this season has gone beyond the mound – and the Athletics' closer is getting recognized for it. On Monday, Major League Baseball named Miller as one of the AL West nominees for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. It is handed to a player who represents the sport and Clemente himself on and off the field through character, community presence and philanthropic efforts. Clemente, who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for his entire career, was the first Latin American player to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

9/07/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - Why Eckersley believes A's tenure were ‘greatest years' of his life. Programming Note: Dave Stewart’s “All A’s” interview with Dennis Eckersley debuts at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday on NBC Sports California immediately following “A’s Postgame Live.” National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and former Athletics pitcher Dennis Eckersley is an organizational icon and cherished all of his nine seasons with his hometown A’s. Eckersley revealed why his Oakland tenure led to the best years of his life during an interview on NBC Sports California’s “All A’s” with former teammate Dave Stewart. “Beyond [a] thank you. These were the greatest years of my life, that I spent here,” Eckersley told Stewart. “I played 24 years, nine of them here, I’m telling you what … it’s hard to explain. It’s as easy as this, I got to share with my parents, who are gone now, and they came to the game here because they’re from Fremont. Every game, you look up and [see] my mom. “To share that with them, to give them that gift that God gave me, that I could give to them, and share it with these fans who thought I was bad to the bone. They put that music on … I got to share it with these people, and they appreciated it and were good to me. I will never forget that part of my life.” Eckersley of his A’s career. He went , collecting 658 strikeouts and 320 saves, and became a World Series champion in 1989 after Oakland swept the San Francisco Giants in the most iconic — and shaky — Battle of the Bay. Perhaps most legendary, though, was Eckersley’s entrance song. The closer loved being inserted into games at the Coliseum with “Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood and The Destroyers on the speakers surrounding the diamond. Eckersley is very appreciative of the way Oakland fans embraced and supported him, and while his A’s career has been over since 1995, he will miss the loyal fans at the Coliseum. Regardless, today’s 59-78 A’s could use an Eckersley. However, Mason Miller might be on his way to being just that.

9/01/24 Oakland A's lose another heartbreaker to finish six-game road trip. Oakland A's right-hander Mason Miller might have established himself as one of the American League's premier closers during the first five months of the regular season. Josh Jung hit a three-run homer off Miller in the 10th inning to lead the Texas Rangers past the A's 6-4 on Sunday. The loss marked the second straight time a walk-off hit bit the A's, as Leody Taveras hit a game-ending single with one out in the ninth inning in the Rangers' 3-2 win over Oakland on Saturday.
