9/29/24 An AP photographer catches an Orioles celebration from high above the action. Rookie AP photographer Stephanie Scarbrough joined the company in June, shortly after completing a 10-month photojournalism internship in Washington, D.C. Currently based in Baltimore, Scarbrough covers everything from sports and daily life to breaking news and presidential happenings. A combination of injuries and a prolonged hitting slump plagued the Baltimore Orioles, who had lost three games in a row before facing the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, Sept. 19. The game was tied 3-all in the top of the ninth inning after the San Francisco Giants' Casey Schmitt hit an RBI single. When Orioles designated hitter Anthony Santander stepped into the batter's box, there were already two outs.

Reds slide into abyss continues with walk-off loss to Giants Reds slide into abyss continues with walk-off loss to Giants Reds slide into abyss continues with walk-off loss to Giants SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Casey Schmitt hit a walk-off double in the 10th inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Sunday, but lost Jung Hoo Lee to a left shoulder injury. After the Reds failed to score in the top of the 10th off Giants reliever Luke Jackson (1-1), Schmitt's first hit of the season was a two-out ground-rule double to left-center field off Emilio Pagan (2-3), scoring automatic runner Luis Matos. He had been 0 for 11 after being recalled on Friday from Triple-A Sacramento. “Just

5/10/24 Back with SF Giants, Casey Schmitt has a new trick to crack big-league pitching. An ill-timed shave meant Casey Schmitt arrived in the heavily mustachioed home clubhouse at Oracle Park lacking the facial hair to match most of his teammates. “The prescription is, like, minus-7.5, I think it is,” Schmitt said, turning to his locker and grabbing a packet of disposable contact lenses. Getting the start at shortstop Friday night with Nick Ahmed (wrist) placed on the 10-day injured list, the change for Schmitt should be invisible to the viewing public but could make all the difference at the plate, where he struggled to keep up with major-league pitching toward the tail end of his rookie year. “I wasn't really seeing spin,” Schmitt said.

3/20/24 Giants option Schmitt, Villar to Triple-A ahead of Opening Day. As the Giants finalize roster moves ahead of MLB Opening Day next week, they made some adjustments Wednesday morning. San Francisco optioned Casey Schmitt and David Villar to Triple-A Sacramento, the team announced in a press release. Spencer Bivens and Cody Stashak also were re-assigned to minor league camp. Schmitt was a part of the Giants' youth movement that at one point in the season was one of the few bright spots in a lackluster year.

2/18/24 Can a new number, new facial hair and new nickname give Casey Schmitt a fresh start in 2024?. Casey Schmitt has a new number, new facial hair and, he hopes, a new nickname. “I'm gonna go by '1-0' now,” said Schmitt, a wisp of blond hair gracing his upper lip, referencing his new jersey number after his old one, No. 6, was taken by new manager Bob Melvin. Will it add up to a fresh start for the San Francisco Giants' slick-fielding infield prospect who burst into the big leagues last season but stumbled down the stretch? While Schmitt bookended his rookie season with fireworks, recording more total bases in his first three games than any player in Giants history, then homering twice against the Dodgers in the final game of the year, it wasn't enough to obscure what transpired in between.

12/18/23 Player Review: Casey Schmitt. Casey Schmitt rocketed onto the Major League scene in early May. The first of many position players to make his debut in 2023, Schmitt, who had won a Minor League gold glove award in 2022, wasted no time in flaunting his potential with the bat. By the end of May, Schmitt had hit safely in 15 of his first 22 appearances with 9 multi-hit games while hitting .325 with 1 walk to elevate his OBP to .329 and was slugging .470. Schmitt's 27 hits in May plummeted to just 8 in June (64 PA), and 6 in July (65 PA).

10/12/23 Player Review: Patrick Bailey. It took a little longer than we'd hoped, but the San Francisco Giants finally got back on track by the emergence of their top catching prospect. The Giants' #1 pick in the COVID-shortened 2020 MLB Draft wound up being the breakout prospect of the Farhan Zaidi era (so far). The San Francisco Giants weren't exactly rudderless — Casey Schmitt was off to a hot 9-game start to his MLB career (.417/.417/.694) — but they needed a spark. The Joey Bart-Blake Sabol catching combo was tough.

8/17/23 Minor League round up, 8/16: Casey Schmitt is hot!. Five games for the San Francisco Giants Minor League Baseball affiliates on Wednesday, as the ACL teams had the day off, and just one DSL team played, making up a previously postponed contest. Low-A San Jose RHP Gerelmi Maldonado (No. 40 CPL) has been moved from the 7-day IL to the 60-day IL, ending his breakout season. Low-A San Jose utility player Justin Bench was placed on the 7-day IL. A 17th-round pick last year, Bench has been limited to just 27 games this year, but he's been excellent in those 27, hitting .362/.456/.468 with just 13 strikeouts in 114 plate appearances across the ACL and Low-A.

6/20/23 The core of this red-hot Giants team feels like it's here to stay.

“Maybe it’s not fair to declare Casey Schmitt, Patrick Bailey and Luis Matos a new championship core yet. But it’s easy to see why they have Giants fans wishcasting about what might come to pass.”
