10/03/24 Pirates' Paul Skenes gives Olivia Dunne epic baseball card gift. Despite a disappointing season for the Pittsburgh Pirates, in which the team extended its playoff drought to nine years and finished with a losing record for the sixth straight season, there is some reason for optimism. The Pirates have found a legitimate ace in pitcher Paul Skenes, who broke the franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie pitcher in 2024. The young hurler put together a dominant season on the field.

10/01/24 Brewers' Chourio and Padres' Merrill head impressive list of rookies in postseason. This has been a banner season for rookies. The most notable of the bunch — Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes — won’t be part of the playoffs. But plenty of other first-year players will be playing big roles in this postseason. Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio and San Diego's Jackson Merrill head that list. The 20-year-old Chourio became the youngest player ever to complete a season with at least 20 homers and 20 steals. Merrill made a seamless transition from shortstop to center field while also collecting 90 RBIs.

9/29/24 Pirates' Paul Skenes Impresses Yankees Manager. Paul Skenes took the baseball world by storm with one of the best seasons by a rookie pitcher in Pittsburgh Pirates and MLB history. Among the plethora of people impressed by the 2023 No. 1 overall pick was New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Along with Skenes' stuff, how he manages to make things look easy grabbed the longtime Yankees manager's attention. “Pretty dynamic," Boone said.

9/27/24 Yankees get first look at 'beast' Pirates rookie Paul Skenes in his final 2024 start. Saturday may not matter when it comes to the postseason for the Yankees. But it will have some significance — it will be their first look at Pirates phenom Paul Skenes. “He's been one of the big stories of this season,” manager Aaron Boone said Friday before the two teams opened a three-game series in The Bronx to close the regular season. “There's no question he's had a massive impact, starting the All-Star Game , and putting together a great season.” 3 Paul Skenes is set to take the ball one more time during his strong rookie season. 9/27/24 Paul Skenes See Big Future for Pirates. Individually, Paul Skenes couldn't have had a better rookie season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 2023 No. 1 overall pick was one of the few bright spots, breaking multiple records for the Pirates and across Major League Baseball. At 74-85, the Pirates are set to finish under .500 for the sixth straight season, finish in fourth or fifth place in the National League Central for an eighth straight year and miss the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. Skenes expects those struggles to stop in 2025.

9/26/24 The Pittsburgh Pirates brought Paul Skenes along slowly. The star rookie pitcher now understands why. Paul Skenes didn't love the plan the Pittsburgh Pirates laid out for him in the spring, the one designed to bring the most talented pitching prospect in a generation along slowly and protect the right arm on which so much relies. Looking back after a dazzling season in which the 22-year-old rookie somehow surpassed even the most outsized expectations — starting the All-Star Game, flirting with the occasional no-hitter, holding his own against the best in the game and making the Pirates matter in a way they haven't in nearly a decade — Skenes admits the decision to have him begin his first full professional season in Triple-A so he could build his endurance up gradually was the right call. “I don't know if there can be a perfect plan, but it was just about perfectly put together,” Skenes said Wednesday. While Skenes is looking forward to his final start of the season when the Pirates visit Yankee Stadium this weekend, he's already thinking about what awaits in 2025, when the training wheels might come off, or at least be loosened considerably.

9/25/24 The Pittsburgh Pirates brought Paul Skenes along slowly. The star rookie pitcher now understands why. Pittsburgh Pirates rookie pitcher Paul Skenes says the team's plan to bring him along slowly worked almost perfectly. The 22-year-old began the season in Triple-A. He arrived in the majors in mid-May and is 11-2 with a 1.99 ERA heading into his final start of the year against the New York Yankees. Skenes says he didn't love the idea of starting in the minors but believes it's one of the reasons he feels so good in late September. The hard-throwing right-hander says he expects to have fewer restrictions on his availability in 2025.

9/24/24 Pirates Have Obvious Positives, and Setbacks. The book on the Pittsburgh Pirates' season is all but written with six games remaining and their playoff hopes well out the window. Pittsburgh experienced its fair share of ups and downs, including being in the postseason picture to crashing out after going 8-19 in August. With the ups and downs, ESPN graded the Pirates' season as a C, highlighting the pitching they received from Paul Skenes and Jared Jones while also noting they have to address their struggles at the plate if they're going to improve. "Paul Skenes came up and immediately became one of the best starters and most recognizable players in the game, and fellow rookie Jared Jones emerged as a potential top-of-the-rotation starter," ESPN writes.

9/18/24 Top Pirates pickup could be key in surprise 2025 turnaround. Aside from days when Paul Skenes starts, there hasn't been much for Pittsburgh Pirates fans to get excited about this season. The Pirates are mired in last place in the National League Central, and the team tried to build toward the future at the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline by adding the likes of Bryan De La Cruz and Nick Yorke.

9/17/24 Pirates' 3 Early Free Agent Targets In 2024 MLB Offseason. The 2024 season had its ups and downs for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The debut of Paul Skenes was the highlight but Pittsburgh had plenty of memorable moments from several impact players to make this season a little more tolerable for fans. The Pirates are six wins away from topping their win total from last year but another season will pass without playoff baseball. MLB free agency won't have as many big players this winter as the last, but there are still recognizable names that will demand heavy markets.

9/17/24 Pallante outduels Skenes to lead St. Louis to 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. Paul Skenes was as good as advertised on Monday night, with the star rookie from the Pirates allowing only one run over six innings against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The problem for Skenes was that Andre Pallante was better.

9/15/24 Pirates send surging Paul Skenes to face Cardinals. Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes has shown no signs of fatigue while transitioning from college to the pro game. Skenes (10-2, 2.10 ERA) is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two September starts. "I'm not tired, really," Skenes said after earning a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins in his last start Sept. 9.

9/12/24 Pirates' Paul Skenes Makes Hopeful List. Rarely does a starting pitcher take the league by storm from the moment they step on the mound in the big leagues. Fortunately for the Pittsburgh Pirates, that has been the case for them with Paul Skenes. Skenes is 10-2 with a 2.10 ERA through 20 starts and has struck out a rookie franchise record 151 batters in 120 innings pitched. If it weren't for the stellar season San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill is having, Skenes would likely be the heavy favorite to win the National League Rookie of the Year.
