With Mitch Garver's right wrist still sore from taking a 93-mph fastball from Joe Ryan off it in Sunday's loss to the Twins, the Mariners were forced to temporarily suspend their experiment of having their primary designated hitter serve as the backup catcher. Prior to Tuesday's series opener vs. the Orioles, the Mariners selected the minor-league contract of catcher Seby Zavala and put him on the active roster. Left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Diaz was optioned to Tacoma to make room for Zavala. When the Seattle Mariners signed Mitch Garver to a two-year contract this offseason, the idea was that he'd be ditching the catcher's gear to serve as the team's primary designated hitter. Garver was primarily a catcher over his previous seven seasons with the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers, but had been hampered by a slew of injuries.
