5/26/24 SF Giants sit Marco Luciano for 2nd straight game amid defensive woes. When the Giants called up Marco Luciano, their top decision-maker, Farhan Zaidi, said the club was going to “give him a good shot at this job” and that the their highly touted prospect was going to “get some run” at shortstop in Nick Ahmed's absence. Not two weeks later, Luciano's name was absent from the starting lineup for the final two games of the Giants' road trip. In their series finale Sunday against the Mets, manager Bob Melvin opted for the left-handed-hitting Brett Wisely over Luciano, even with Sean Manaea, a southpaw, on the mound for their opponents. “Maybe not Marco's best trip, as far as defensively,” Melvin said before first pitch Sunday.

5/18/24 SF Giants to give Marco Luciano 'a good shot' at shortstop job. Bob Melvin perched himself on the top step of the third-base dugout Saturday morning and directed his gaze toward shortstop. Marco Luciano was fielding ground balls while Nick Ahmed made throws to first base, wearing a black brace where his glove would typically be on his left wrist. As long as Ahmed, 34, remains out, the Giants manager intends to get a good look at the 22-year-old still considered the organization's shortstop of the future. “We patched it together with Casey (Schmitt) for a few days and Casey did a nice job,” Melvin said.

5/14/24 Overmatched, undermanned SF Giants lose 5th in a row to mighty Dodgers. The Dodgers brought their $300 million behemoth to Oracle Park and needed only the first two games to secure a series win. Another strong contingent of fans in Dodger blue watched Tuesday for a second straight night as their team vanquished the home squad, whose good-luck threads still weren't enough to overcome its undermanned and overmatched roster. Technically it was the Giants who lost, 10-2, but it might as well have been the Triple-A River Cats. It was just on May 1, after all, that Marco Luciano and Blake Sabol and Luis Matos and Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely and Jakson Reetz made up two-thirds of Sacramento's batting order.

3/27/24 'Pat the Bat' Burrell returns home on Giants coaching staff. If Marco Luciano, Luis Matos and the rest of the Giants' young hitters break out this season, a new – but familiar – face in the clubhouse will be a big reason why. “Pat the Bat” is back with the Giants for the latest chapter in his charmed Bay Area baseball life. Pat Burrell joined new manager Bob Melvin's coaching staff as a hitting instructor, 29 years after helping San Jose's Bellarmine High win the West Catholic Athletic League title, 14 years after helping spark the Giants' breakthrough World Series run, and four years after he got his coaching start as a roving hitting instructor in the team's minor league ranks.
