6/27/24 Cubs searching for answers, trying to avoid 4-game sweep in series finale Thursday in San Francisco. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The struggling Chicago Cubs will be looking to avoid a sweep in San Francisco when they conclude their four-game series against the Giants on Thursday afternoon. At this point, any win for the Cubs would be welcome. Their long malaise continued late Wednesday night, as the Giants’ Luis Matos hit a […]

6/07/24 Giants notes: Melvin excited to give Ramos opportunity in center field. When the Giants lost Jung Hoo Lee for the year, they hoped to count on Luis Matos to handle center field. Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater are better in the corners, and while Tyler Fitzgerald and Brett Wisely both can play center field, neither is viewed as a regular yet and Wisely is needed at shortstop. Heliot Ramos had not played center regularly since 2022, and the staff initially didn't view him as someone who could slide back over.

6/06/24 The SF Giants' demoting Luis Matos makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

6/05/24 Why SF Giants sent Luis Matos back to minors not a month after winning NL honors. Less than a month after he was named the National League's player of the week, Luis Matos was packing up his bags Wednesday morning inside the visitors' clubhouse at Chase Field. The 23-year-old outfielder was optioned back to Triple-A Sacramento when Austin Slater was activated from the injured list before first pitch, a roster move that would have been unthinkable only a few weeks ago, when Matos drove in 11 runs in a two-game span and earned leaguewide honors alongside Aaron Judge. While Matos was sent down with a batting line of .224/.247/.329 — a .577 OPS and 69 OPS+, 31% below league average — that doesn't reflect the initial success he enjoyed, when it looked like he would be the Giants' everyday center fielder in the wake of Jung Hoo Lee's season-ending injury. Hitting safely in 10 of his first 13 games after being called up May 12, Matos earned a promotion to the leadoff spot for 10 games and put himself in the company of some of the franchise's greatest players with 16 RBIs in his first five games while making some highlight-worthy catches in center.

5/29/24 Luis Matos Hits Walk-off Sacrifice Fly, Giants Relievers Blank Phillies in 1-0, 10-Inning Win. Luis Matos hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Spencer Howard pitched four scoreless innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the MLB-leading Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Tuesday night. After the Phillies failed to score in the top of the 10th off Sean Hjelle (2-1), automatic runner Tyler Fitzgerald advanced to third on a flyball by Wilmer Flores before Matos knocked him in with a flyball to left off Matt Strahm (3-1).
