Ace Gerrit Cole was pitching well early on, but he got slapped around in a three-run third. Not only did Rafael Devers — his arch nemesis — give the Red Sox a lead with an RBI single in that third, but he swatted a booming home run off Cole two innings later, admiring his work with a huge bat flip. New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole had been one of the best hurlers in the game for so long, it was almost taken for granted—until the nightmarish first half of his 2024 campaign. Now his opt-out at the end of the season is in jeopardy. Cole has always been one of MLB's most durable starters, but he suffered the first significant injury of his career in March when he experienced inflammation in his right forearm. After a cautious rehab including three minor-league starts, he made his season debut for the Yankees against the Baltimore Orioles on June 19, allowing three hits and two runs over four innings.
